
Market Basket ETF puts 4% in Tessel Software. Digital Future ETF puts 40% there. Each fund owns many stocks, but one company's fortunes matter ten times as much in the second.

The ETF mechanism connects a traded price to a basket's value. It does not make that basket broad.
Four ways to fill the same wrapper
These four labels describe equity ETFs, funds that invest in stocks. Each starts with a different mandate: what it sets out to own.

A broad-market ETF aims to represent a wide market, such as a country's stocks. A sector ETF focuses on a group of similar businesses.
A thematic ETF follows a business trend that can cross sector boundaries. An automation theme could connect software developers with industrial equipment makers.
A factor ETF systematically selects or weights stocks by a characteristic, such as company size. A tilt means giving that characteristic more emphasis. The factor investing lesson explains the characteristics and evidence.
Smart beta is an industry label for index rules that go beyond weighting companies solely by market value. “Smart” is a label, not evidence of better returns.
These labels overlap. A sector fund can also have a factor tilt, as can a fund spanning many sectors. Sector and thematic funds can track an index or use an active manager. A specialized index can bake in choices an active manager would make. Tracking it faithfully does not turn it into the whole market.
Follow the rule into the holdings
A holding's weight is its share of the fund's value. Add Technology Sector ETF at 20% in Tessel and a multi-sector factor ETF at 2%. Digital Future follows an automation theme. Tessel's slice changes from a sliver to almost half the basket.
For Market Basket, $1,000 × 4% = $40 of indirect Tessel exposure. The same purchase gives you $200 through Technology Sector, $400 through Digital Future and $20 through the factor fund. Counting the names misses how the dollars are divided.
Suppose Tessel falls 25% in a day while every other holding stays flat, with fees left out. The change in basket value is:
For Digital Future, 40% × −25% = −10%: a $100 loss on your $1,000. Market Basket loses $10, or 1%; Technology Sector loses $50, or 5%; the factor fund loses $5, or 0.5%.
That measures sensitivity to Tessel, not overall safety. In real markets, the other holdings move too. This factor fund's small Tessel slice does not make factor funds universally safer: many small holdings can share one big risk.
Where each kind earns its place
Broad exposure lets you participate in a market without choosing which business group will lead it. In a fund weighted by market value, the biggest companies get the biggest weights. A long holdings list is not an equal split.
A sector fund expresses a view about one part of the economy without requiring you to pick one winning company. Its businesses can still suffer together.
A theme can connect different business groups. That reach need not spread the risk: software and machinery suppliers could both lose sales when customers postpone factory upgrades.
A factor fund keeps a systematic preference for certain characteristics. That consistency is the appeal; the tilt can also trail the broader market for years.
The narrower the thesis, the more it asks of you. You need a reason the businesses will prosper, a view on what their prices already expect, and a way the story could fail. A basket of stocks can still be one bet.
A good theme can be a poor investment
Automation can spread while suppliers compete away the profits. Or the businesses can prosper while their shares disappoint because buyers already paid for an even brighter future. A growing business can still be an expensive investment.
Read the index methodology, which defines its rules, or the active fund's mandate. “Automation” might mean robot makers, component suppliers or businesses that merely use robots. A large holding might earn little of its revenue from the theme. Look for what qualifies and what determines its weight. The name can promise a sharper focus than the holdings deliver.
A backtest simulates a strategy on old data. It is not money earned by a fund before it existed. A fund's live record starts when it actually invests.
MSCI's World Index factsheet labels its pre-launch data as backtested. Even live index results are not a fund's returns after costs. A strategy that looks good in a simulation can disappoint when implemented.
Choose the exposure before the story
Three questions cut through the name:
- What gets a stock into the fund?
- What decides its weight?
- What could hurt many holdings at once?
Digital Future is a concentrated automation bet: 40% in Tessel, with its holdings chosen around one business trend. It cannot do the same job as Market Basket's broad mandate.
With a $200 purchase, the Tessel slices are $80 and $8. The purchase is smaller, but Tessel still accounts for 40% versus 4%.
Compare expense ratios among funds with similar mandates. Narrow or complex funds may charge more. A cheap version of a different bet is still a different bet.
A fund's objective can also set a time limit. Many leveraged and inverse ETFs target a multiple of a single day's return, which changes what it means to hold them.
