Autodesk (ADSK)

Design and operations software for buildings, manufactured products, construction, and media.

At close$219.63(+0.36%)

Autodesk makes the software people use to draw the physical world before it gets built — buildings, roads, machine parts, film creatures. Nearly all of it is rented by the year, and the desktop drawing tools still fund everything else. The bet now is on the messier work after the drawing: coordinating the jobsite, and keeping finished machines and buildings running.

  • AEC Collection (Revit, Civil 3D, Navisworks)

    · Product line

The drawing tools behind buildings, roads and water systems, sold as one bundle. Buildings and infrastructure together are about half of Autodesk's revenue and the fastest-growing of its four main product families. Data centers and infrastructure work is offsetting slower commercial building.

Competes with Archicad (Nemetschek) · OpenBuildings and OpenRoads (Bentley Systems) · Tekla Structures (Trimble)

    In plain English

Before a hospital or a highway gets built, someone draws it. Revit is where architects and engineers build that drawing as a connected three-dimensional model — walls, beams, ducts, all linked, so moving one thing updates the rest. Civil 3D does the same for roads, rail and land development.

Firms rent one seat per person, for a year or three at a time, and keep renewing because the model file is where years of work live and everyone downstream expects to receive it. Leaving means leaving the file behind. Content partners feed it too: Eaton's electrical product data drops straight into Revit.

  • AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT

    · Product line

The general-purpose drawing program, sold wide and cheap to small firms and one-person shops across every industry. A quarter of revenue — but a slice that has shrunk every year since FY2023, because growth here comes from price and mix rather than expansion.

Competes with BricsCAD (Hexagon) · DraftSight (Dassault Systèmes) · Archicad (Nemetschek)

    In plain English

Think of it as the word processor of technical drawing: a blank sheet, lines, dimensions, and a file type called DWG that almost every firm in the trade can open. AutoCAD LT is the stripped-down version for people who only ever draw flat.

Customers rent it one seat per person, from a single surveyor up to a large engineering office, and Autodesk increasingly sells it straight off its own website. Nobody leaves easily, because drawings get passed between companies as DWG files — drop AutoCAD and your work stops opening cleanly on everyone else's screen.

  • Inventor, Vault and the PD&M Collection

    · Product line

The desktop kit for designing machines and parts — Inventor for the modelling, Vault for keeping versions straight. Around a seventh of revenue, growing in the mid-teens, and the customer base Autodesk wants to move onto Fusion.

Competes with SOLIDWORKS (Dassault Systèmes) · Solid Edge and NX (Siemens) · Creo (PTC)

    In plain English

Machines get drawn part by part before anyone cuts metal. Inventor is where a mechanical engineer shapes each bracket and bearing and snaps them together on screen to check nothing collides. Vault is the shared cabinet that remembers which version of every part is the current one.

Mid-sized manufacturers buy the two bundled with a few extras and renew year after year — Loh Services, part of the Friedhelm Loh Group, widened its company-wide contract this spring. The rivals here are larger than Autodesk is in this market, so the money comes from holding the middle of it rather than taking the top.

  • Autodesk Fusion

    · PlatformRamping

One online program that shapes the part, programs the cutting machine and tests whether it will bend. Small so far, but it is where Autodesk pushes its AI hardest and one of three lines it promised to keep commenting on.

Competes with Onshape (PTC) · SOLIDWORKS / 3DEXPERIENCE (Dassault Systèmes) · NX with integrated CAM (Siemens)

    In plain English

Design work used to need three separate programs and three separate files — one to shape the part, one to tell the milling machine how to cut it, one to check whether it would break. Fusion does all of that on a single file that lives online.

Small machine shops buy seats because a ten-person shop cannot afford three tools plus the people to babysit them. The pitch to Autodesk's own Inventor customers is the same file, reachable from anywhere. A German manufacturer swapping out its old drawing-and-machining software, five-axis cutting included, was the named win this summer.

  • Autodesk Forma

    · PlatformRamping

The shared jobsite workspace: current drawings, checklists, quantity take-offs and costs in one place for contractors and building owners. Renamed from Construction Cloud in March 2026, and after the operations deal it is the loudest growth story on Autodesk's calls.

Competes with Procore (Procore Technologies) · e-Builder and Viewpoint (Trimble) · iTwin (Bentley Systems)

    In plain English

A building site runs on a thousand small answers — which drawing is current, what got installed yesterday, how much concrete is still to pour. Forma is the shared workspace where the contractor, the architect and the owner all look at the same set instead of emailing files back and forth.

Contractors and owners pay a subscription for it, and they pick it because the models came out of Revit upstream, so the handoff from drawing to building is short. One of the world's largest retailers chose it to run its North American sites, and a big cloud company is spreading it across its data centers.

  • Maya, 3ds Max and Arnold

    · Product line

The modelling, animation and rendering tools behind film effects, animation and games. The smallest product family, under a twentieth of revenue and a smaller share every year, though it grew 15% last quarter.

Competes with Blender (Blender Foundation) · Houdini (SideFX) · ftrack (Backlight)

    In plain English

Every computer-made creature, explosion or animated short starts as a mesh of points an artist pushes around. Maya and 3ds Max are where that pushing happens; Arnold is the piece that turns the finished mesh into a picture, one frame at a time, ready for a screen.

Visual-effects houses, animation studios and game teams rent the tools as one bundle, and the bundling matters: it keeps any single tool from being priced on its own. Blender — free, open and made by a foundation — is the steady pressure underneath, and this line's share of Autodesk has fallen every year since FY2023.

  • MaintainX

    · BrandRamping

Bought for about $3.6B and closed in August 2026: phone software telling a maintenance crew which machine to fix next. It adds roughly $60M of revenue in the second half of FY2027, well under a cent of every dollar, and was losing money at the deal.

Competes with Maximo Application Suite (IBM) · Limble CMMS (Limble) · Fiix (Rockwell)

    In plain English

When a conveyor jams or a walk-in freezer starts running warm, somebody has to log it, order the part and show it was fixed. MaintainX is the phone app carrying that job list — work orders, inspection checklists, and the history of what broke and when.

Factories, building operators and food-service chains subscribe to it, and the people holding it are the crews on the floor rather than an office. For Autodesk it is the first step past drawing things into running them; management expects operations to become a bigger business than construction over time.
