Profile

Berkshire Hathaway Inc.BRK-AFinancials

Combines insurance underwriting and investment income with wholly owned rail, regulated energy, manufacturing, distribution, service, retail and travel-center operations. A decentralized structure keeps day-to-day operating decisions at subsidiaries while the parent directs major capital allocation.

Combines an insurance platform—GEICO, Berkshire Hathaway Primary Group and Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Group—with wholly owned freight rail, utility and energy, manufacturing, distribution, service, retail and travel-center businesses. Insurance premiums are invested before many claims are paid, while BNSF transports freight across western and southern U.S. routes and Berkshire Hathaway Energy operates regulated utilities, pipelines and renewable-power assets.

Runs subsidiaries with decentralized day-to-day management, leaving major capital-allocation and operating-performance decisions with the parent. Most sales, service and leasing revenue is generated in the United States, with additional operations in Europe and Asia-Pacific. Results depend on insurance regulation and catastrophe reserves, rate approvals and wildfire exposure at utilities, rail regulation and network investment, supplier and customer concentration, and market prices for its equity securities.
