Profile

Editas Medicine, Inc.EDITHealth Care

Develops CRISPR-Cas9 medicines that edit genes directly inside the body, having pivoted in December 2024 from a discontinued sickle cell program to an in vivo pipeline led by an LDL-cholesterol candidate. Near-term revenue comes from licensing and collaboration payments tied to Vertex Pharmaceuticals and Bristol Myers Squibb rather than marketed products.

Grew out of CRISPR-Cas9 research at the Broad Institute, Harvard, and UC Berkeley, incorporated in 2013 as a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing genome-editing medicines.

An ex vivo cell therapy for sickle cell disease and thalassemia was discontinued in December 2024 alongside a roughly two-thirds workforce cut, resetting the business around in vivo editing delivered directly inside the body.

The lead candidate, EDIT-401, edits liver cells to lower LDL cholesterol, alongside an earlier-stage sickle cell program and a lipid-nanoparticle delivery platform aimed at additional tissues. Near-term revenue is non-dilutive, from a Vertex Pharmaceuticals license tied to the approved therapy CASGEVY and a Bristol Myers Squibb/Juno T-cell collaboration, with no marketed products yet.

Advancing the in vivo pipeline from preclinical work toward clinical trials depends on continued access to capital markets and on sustained Vertex and Bristol Myers Squibb payments.
