IQVIA (IQV)

Combines healthcare intelligence and commercial technology with global clinical research services.

$267.78
vs last close−2.31 (−0.86%)

IQVIA sells two things to one set of customers: the companies that make medicines. It runs their clinical trials under contract, for years at a time. And it licenses the industry's data on what doctors prescribe and what happens to patients, plus the consultants, software and field staff that act on it. Trials pay most of the bills; the commercial side is thawing after a long spending freeze.

  • Clinical Development Services

    · Service

Running drug companies' trials for them, from first-in-human studies through post-launch work. Signed work not yet delivered stood at $34.2B in mid-2026, with $9.23B of it due to become revenue within a year. Watch cancellations.

Competes with Full-service development and ICON FSP (ICON) · PPD clinical research (Thermo Fisher) · Full-service trials (Medpace) · Functional service provision (Fortrea)

    In plain English

Drug companies invent medicines; they do not want to build and staff the machinery to test them in thousands of patients across dozens of countries. So they hand the job over. IQVIA finds the patients, runs the trial sites and gathers the results.

A contract is signed once and paid out over three to five years of work, which is why the pile of signed-but-undelivered work matters more than any single quarter. Sometimes IQVIA takes the whole programme; sometimes it just lends staff to sit inside the customer's own teams, which earns a thinner margin. No single customer is even a tenth of sales.

  • Patient Solutions & Commercial Engagement Services

    · Service

Sales representatives, medical staff and patient-support teams that IQVIA employs and puts to work under the customer's brand. Both halves grew double digits in the quarter ended June 2026; Pfizer hired it to promote selected products across 23 European countries.

Competes with Inizio Engage contract sales and medical affairs (Inizio) · EVERSANA commercialisation services (EVERSANA) · Lash Group hub services (CareMetx) · CoverMyMeds patient support (McKesson)

    In plain English

Rented staff, badged as the customer's own. A drug maker launching a single product does not want to hire, train and then unwind a whole sales force of its own; it borrows one instead. IQVIA employs the representatives, and the medical specialists who answer doctors' technical questions, and bills the drug maker for them.

The other half sits with patients: getting someone started on a newly prescribed medicine, walking them through the paperwork that stands between them and it, and keeping them on it. Both are paid programme by programme, year by year, and both lean on IQVIA's own data to decide which doctors and which patients to reach.

  • Information Offerings

    · Product line

Yearly subscriptions to the industry's prescription and sales data — what gets dispensed, where, to whom. Roughly $2B a year and the steadiest money on the map, but it only grows low single digits. Watch whether AI-ready feeds speed that up.

Competes with Market Clarity / OptumInsight data (UnitedHealth Group) · Healthcare Map (Komodo Health) · Healthcare measurement data (NielsenIQ)

    In plain English

Every pharmacy till and wholesaler shipment leaves a record. IQVIA buys those records in bulk from the pharmacies, wholesalers and medical-records firms that hold them, strips the names out, stitches them together country by country, and rents the result back to drug makers, who buy it to see how their medicines are actually moving. It is the company that counts what the whole shelf sold, not just your own crate.

Customers pay every year, for as long as they need to see their market, and they rarely stop. Boehringer Ingelheim, one of IQVIA's drug-maker customers, picked these feeds as the foundation its commercial teams worldwide would run on.

  • IQVIA Laboratories

    · Service

Blood, genetic and biomarker testing for trials, run on IQVIA's own benches. It feeds off the trial business next door, inside a central-lab market of roughly six billion dollars a year. Watch whether trial volumes keep the benches full.

Competes with Central Laboratory Services (Labcorp) · Central laboratory testing (Eurofins) · ICON Central Laboratories (ICON)

    In plain English

A trial is not only doctors and patients. It is thousands of vials that have to be shipped somewhere and tested exactly the same way every time, so a sample drawn on one continent can be compared with one drawn on another. IQVIA owns those benches — the blood work, the genetic sequencing, the tests that show whether a drug is doing anything measurable.

The lab is paid per sample and per study, usually written into the same trial contract, so it rises and falls with the work next door. It began life as a joint venture with Quest; IQVIA bought out the 40% it did not own for $760 million, so the profit is no longer shared.

  • Real World Evidence & Late Phase Research

    · Service

Studies of medicines already on the market — who takes them, whether they work outside a trial, what goes wrong. Built on thousands of real-world data sets, and moved into the trials division in 2026 because it behaves like one.

Competes with Aetion real-world analytics (Datavant) · Panalgo (Norstella) · RTI Health Solutions (RTI)

    In plain English

A trial tells you a medicine worked in a few thousand carefully chosen volunteers. It does not tell you what happens when ordinary people, carrying other illnesses and other prescriptions, use it for years. That second question is this business.

Regulators want the safety answer after approval; the bodies that decide what gets paid for want to know what the drug is worth in practice. Drug makers pay IQVIA to run patient registries and long-running observational studies, using the same de-named patient records the data business already holds. In 2026 the company moved $674 million of this work in alongside the clinical trials, on the grounds that it grows the same way.

  • Technology Platforms

    · Platform

Licensed software the industry runs on: side-effect reporting, quality and regulatory record-keeping, trial-site and patient tools — plus the sales-rep system now being handed to Salesforce through 2029. Watch what replaces that licence money.

Competes with Vault CRM (Veeva Systems) · LifeSphere safety platform (ArisGlobal) · Argus safety (Oracle) · Medidata clinical platform (Dassault Systèmes)

    In plain English

The unglamorous software a drug maker cannot legally operate without. When a patient somewhere reports a side effect, it has to be logged, assessed and filed properly; IQVIA sells the system that does it. Same for the paperwork trails regulators demand, and for the screens that trial sites and patients type into.

Customers pay a licence fee year after year, because swapping out the system that holds your regulatory records is nobody's idea of a good weekend. One piece is heading the other way: IQVIA licensed its sales-rep software to Salesforce in 2024 and promised to keep its roughly four hundred existing customers supported through 2029, so the money there shifts toward the licence and the data sold alongside it.

  • IQVIA.ai

    · PlatformRamping

One doorway to the AI helpers IQVIA builds into everything else it sells — roughly 300 of them running across about 90 kinds of work, against about twenty a little over a year earlier. It has no price line of its own.

Competes with Vault AI agents (Veeva Systems) · Orchestrate (EVERSANA) · Life sciences AI practice (Accenture)

    In plain English

Software that carries out a slice of a job by itself instead of waiting for someone to click through it — in the trials half of the house and in the selling half. IQVIA gathers these into a single place customers sign into, next to whatever else they already buy.

Nothing is billed as "AI". It is sold as one more reason to buy the data, the trials or the software, and management credits it for part of the faster growth it now expects, without putting a figure on it. Four of the ten biggest drug makers pay IQVIA to build these tools with them. It was built with NVIDIA, the chip maker, as a collaborator, and Amazon's cloud arm is its preferred home for this work.

  • Analytics & Consulting

    · Service

Project work advising drug makers on launches, pricing and getting a medicine paid for. It grew high single digits in the quarter ended June 2026, its fastest since 2022 after roughly three years of frozen customer budgets.

Competes with Life Sciences consulting (Accenture) · Life-sciences commercial practice (McKinsey) · Life-sciences consulting (Deloitte)

    In plain English

Hired brains, by the project. A drug maker about to launch has a pile of decisions to make — what to charge, which countries first, how to convince the people who decide what gets paid for — and buys a few months of specialists to work them out.

IQVIA's angle is that it already owns the numbers those answers depend on, so it arrives with the evidence rather than a proposal to go find it. That cuts both ways. This was the first thing customers stopped buying when large drug makers froze the spending they could postpone, and it is only now climbing back.
