Profile

National Presto Industries, Inc.NPKIndustrials

Makes pressure cookers, canners, and small kitchen electrics under the Presto name sold through mass retailers, alongside a separate and faster-growing defense unit that is a sole prime contractor for 40 mm ammunition and supplies fuzes, detonators, and precision parts to larger defense primes.

Best known for pressure cookers, canners, griddles, and kitchen electrics sold under the Presto name through mass retailers, the business traces to a Wisconsin steel-and-cement-mixer maker that pivoted into home pressure cooking before the Second World War.

Behind that housewares line sits a faster-growing defense unit, built through acquisitions since the early 2000s into a sole prime contractor for 40 mm ammunition to the U.S. Army, plus plants supplying fuzes, detonators, cartridge cases, and precision metal parts to larger defense primes. A newer unit develops sensor-based safety systems and carbon-monoxide detectors.

Family control has persisted for three generations, with the same leader running the company for over three decades and pairing steady dividends with a large cash reserve. Housewares manufacturing is outsourced overseas, while defense runs in-house across several U.S. plants and depends on a handful of multi-year government contracts.
