Marcus Goldman founded the firm in New York in 1869; his son-in-law Samuel Sachs joined in 1882, and the partnership adopted the Goldman, Sachs & Co. name in 1885. It joined the New York Stock Exchange as a member firm in 1896 and remained privately owned until its 1999 NYSE listing. It became a bank holding company in 2008 and today operates global banking and markets, and asset and wealth management businesses.

Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research adopted research principles in 2002, the year it became a separate division under the firm's Executive Office. They require a reasoned basis for every opinion and call integrity, independence and trust the cornerstones of its reputation. As of 2026 its analysts do not report to investment bankers or sales and trading supervisors, and a significant portion of equity analysts' pay rests on the quality and accuracy of their research.
