UBS dates its founding to the Bank in Winterthur, established in 1862, which merged with Toggenburger Bank in 1912 to form Union Bank of Switzerland. Swiss Bank Corporation, which had bought S.G. Warburg in 1995, merged with Union Bank of Switzerland in 1998 to form UBS, which acquired PaineWebber in 2000. In June 2023 UBS completed the government-brokered takeover of Credit Suisse, keeping its HOLT valuation platform; it aims to substantially complete the integration by end-2026.

Longer UBS equity reports set out a "thesis map" of the open questions that could move a stock, and topics for its flagship Q-Series come from the UBS Question Bank of questions from clients, analysts and salespeople. In 2019 Daniel Dowd, global head of investment bank research, called the approach "the scientific method applied in business", with analysts trained to turn questions into falsifiable hypotheses and test them with Evidence Lab data. Fundamental coverage is paired with Quant Research, Evidence Lab alternative-data sets and the HOLT database of more than 20,000 company profiles.
