Barclays Research has more than 230 senior analysts covering about 1,800 stocks and over 500 credit issuers (2026), and ranked among the top three for Developed Europe research in Extel's 2026 survey.
Barclays traces its origins to a goldsmith bank opened on Lombard Street in London in 1690. In 1896, 20 banks merged to form Barclay and Company Limited. Barclays formed the investment bank Barclays de Zoete Wedd in 1986 and agreed to sell BZW's equities and corporate finance businesses to Credit Suisse First Boston in 1997, retaining the debt business as Barclays Capital. Its 2008 acquisition of Lehman Brothers' North American businesses restored its US equities and research operations. The unit now operates as Barclays Investment Bank.

Barclays says its data science researchers work with sector analysts to incorporate alternative data, AI and machine learning into investment analysis. Its Quantitative Portfolio Strategy group advises clients on portfolio construction, risk allocation and systematic investing. In April 2026, global head of research Brad Rogoff described data science and AI as central to the firm's research business.
