Profile

Ginkgo Bioworks Holdings, Inc.DNAHealth Care

Runs an automated foundry that engineers living cells under contract across many industries, selling the R&D service itself alongside the automation hardware and data tools built around it. Revenue depends on long, customer-specific programs rather than one flagship product, with a biosecurity monitoring unit being spun out to sharpen the focus.

Engineers living cells to order rather than developing its own drugs, treating biology as a manufacturing platform. Founded in 2008 by MIT synthetic-biology researchers, it runs an automated foundry performing strain engineering and cell-line optimization under multi-year contracts, delivering a working organism and the process to run it.

The platform sells lab-automation hardware built around its own automation cart and a data-generation service that returns model-ready assay results to pharmaceutical and industrial customers. These tools are increasingly packaged as a productized autonomous lab, run in-house or accessed as a managed cloud service.

A pathogen-monitoring and biothreat-intelligence unit built during the pandemic is being spun out as an independent company, narrowing the platform to core cell engineering. Roughly half the workforce was cut after the 2021 stock-market debut, and a reverse stock split kept the exchange listing compliant.
