Profile
Owns businesses in commercial property-and-casualty insurance, natural-gas transportation, storage and marketing, U.S. hotels, and rigid plastic packaging. Most income comes through controlled CNA Financial and wholly owned Boardwalk Pipelines, while the parent allocates cash and relies on subsidiary distributions.
Owns a multi-industry portfolio led by CNA Financial's commercial property-and-casualty insurance, Boardwalk Pipelines' natural-gas transportation, storage and marketing, Loews Hotels' owned, joint-venture and managed properties, and a majority interest in Altium Packaging's rigid plastic containers and recycled resins. Operations are centered in the United States, with CNA also underwriting in Canada and Europe and Altium manufacturing across North America.
Allocates parent-company cash among subsidiary investment, acquisitions, dividends and share repurchases while leaving operating decisions to subsidiary management. Cash available to the parent depends substantially on subsidiary distributions; CNA's insurance dividends face regulatory limits, Boardwalk's interstate rates and projects require federal oversight, and hotel results track travel and group demand. Altium is reported through equity-method accounting in the Corporate segment.
