PPG Industries (PPG)
Makes architectural paints and specialized coatings for transportation, infrastructure, factories and packaging.

PPG makes paint and coatings, and almost nothing else. Most of it is the unglamorous kind: sprayed onto new cars, lining food cans, brushed on ship hulls and aircraft parts, with house paint sold through stores in Mexico and Europe. After selling its North American house-paint business it is spread so widely that no single business carries the company. Growth now comes from taking work off rivals.

Automotive OEM Coatings
The colour on a new vehicle and the sealants and prep layers beneath it, for combustion, electric and commercial models. PPG's biggest single business, roughly a sixth of sales, and in spring 2026 it grew about five points faster than world car production.
Competes with Automotive OEM coatings (BASF) · Automotive OEM coatings (Axalta) · Automotive coatings (Nippon Paint)
In plain English
Every car leaving a factory gets painted — and before the colour goes on, the bare metal gets a prep wash and a primer, and the joints get sealed. PPG mixes all of those liquids, supplies parts makers too, and puts its own technical people inside the plant to help run the paint shop.
Carmakers buy by the vehicle's worth of material, so the money follows how many cars the world is building. Swapping supplier is slow and painful: a coating is written into the recipe for a particular model's assembly line and cannot be changed without re-qualifying the whole process. That is why one win can pay for years.

General Industrial Coatings
Coatings for appliances, farm and construction equipment, metal building parts, wood and electronics. Flat for years, it turned up in spring 2026. A $100M batch of new business landed in early 2025, part of it from a rival quitting South America.
Competes with Interpon powder coatings (AkzoNobel) · Industrial coatings (Axalta) · General industrial coatings (Sherwin-Williams)
In plain English
Think of everything that reaches a shop already finished — a fridge shell, a tractor cab, a metal roof panel, a cabinet door. Someone had to coat it first, and this is the business that sells them that coating.
Buying is spread across appliance, equipment and metal-fabrication plants, with no one customer dominant, so growth means winning work many times over. The catch is in the pricing. Here prices move with a cost index and catch up only after a delay, which is exactly why management expects margins to be squeezed in the back half of 2026.

Architectural Coatings Latin America and Asia Pacific
Decorative paint under COMEX, RENNER and TAUBMANS across Latin America and Asia Pacific, much of it through independently run Mexican stores. Around an eighth of sales, up mid-single-digit in spring 2026 on Latin American volume and price. Mexican building activity is the swing.
Competes with Architectural paint (Sherwin-Williams Mexico) · Berel decorative paint (Berel Mexico) · Decorative coatings (AkzoNobel)
In plain English
Walk into a paint shop in Mexico and there is a fair chance it sells COMEX, PPG's name there. Most of those shops belong to independent operators: they run the store, PPG supplies the paint and the sign above the door — a franchise, more or less.
Painters, contractors and weekend decorators buy by the bucket, so sales rise and fall with how much building and repainting is going on. Project spending stayed weak through 2025. The store network is the thing rivals cannot easily copy: when Sherwin-Williams tried to buy Comex outright, competition authorities blocked the deal.

Architectural Coatings EMEA
A dozen national house-paint brands across Europe — SIGMA, JOHNSTONE'S, TIKKURILA and more. Volumes have lagged for years while prices rose every quarter for nearly a decade; spring 2026 finally brought growth in both, with margins widening.
Competes with Dulux (AkzoNobel) · Architectural coatings (Sherwin-Williams) · Regional decorative brands (Jotun)
In plain English
A cupboard of local names rather than one big one: SIGMA, HISTOR, JOHNSTONE'S, LEYLAND, RIPOLIN, PRIMALEX and half a dozen more, each already familiar to painters in its own country. TIKKURILA, the Nordic one, joined in 2021.
Professionals buy at a merchant's trade counter; everyone else picks a tin off a shelf. Europeans have not been redecorating much, so for years the volume sat still and the money came from nudging prices up instead — which PPG managed every quarter for nearly ten years running. Spare factories have been closed to match the smaller demand.

Aerospace Coatings
Sealants, cockpit transparencies, adhesives and coatings for aircraft, plus managing the chemicals customers keep on hand — a roughly $2 billion business, mostly not paint. Its order book runs around $300M and management guides high-single-digit growth for years ahead.
Competes with Aerospace sealants and adhesives (Henkel) · Aerospace adhesives and sealants (3M) · Aerospace coatings (AkzoNobel)
In plain English
Aircraft hold together with more chemistry than most people picture: thick goo that seals fuel tanks and joints, bonded parts, engineered materials, and the heavy see-through panels a pilot looks out through. PPG makes those, paints planes as well, sells some of it through its own distribution, and manages the chemical supplies at customer sites.
It gets paid twice on the same aircraft — once as it is built, then again every five to seven years when the plane is stripped and repainted. Orders have been running ahead of capacity, so it is spending over half a billion dollars on new plant that takes roughly two years to come online.

Protective and Marine Coatings
Heavy-duty paint that keeps big steel structures from rusting, plus SIGMA hull coatings for ships. The steadiest line PPG has — thirteen straight quarters of volume growth, and double-digit organic growth in spring 2026.
Competes with Hempaguard hull coatings (Hempel) · Hull Performance Solutions 2.0 (Jotun) · International marine coatings (AkzoNobel)
In plain English
Steel left outdoors rusts, and a ship's hull grows a beard of barnacles. One coating each solves both, and that is this business: heavy-duty paint for infrastructure and the fabricators who build big steel things, and hull paint for shipyards and shipowners under the SIGMA name.
The hull half has an unusual pitch. A slippery finish stops sea life sticking, so the ship pushes through water more easily and burns less fuel — with fuel rules tightening, that saving is the reason owners pay up. Ships come back on a drydock schedule, so the work repeats.

Traffic Solutions
The white and yellow lines on roads — paints, melt-down plastics and pre-formed markings sold under ENNIS-FLINT. Small, growing mid-single-digit, and topped up in April 2026 by a $65M purchase of Ozark Materials.
Competes with Road marking systems (SWARCO) · Pavement markings (3M) · Pavement markings (Geveko)
In plain English
Somebody has to put the lane markings back, and it is usually a transport agency hiring a highway contractor. PPG sells them the material in three forms: ordinary road paint, thermoplastic that is melted and laid down hot, and markings shaped in a factory and pressed onto the road surface.
So the customer is, in the end, a public budget — spending set by what governments decide roads are worth this year. PPG came into the business by buying Ennis-Flint in 2020 and has kept buying since.

Automotive Refinish Coatings
Paint, sundries and mixing kit for the body shops that repair crashed cars, sold through distributors. A down year against a loaded comparison: distributors pulled purchases into early 2025, so spring 2026 volumes fell double-digit and dented the segment's margin.
Competes with Refinish coatings (Axalta) · Glasurit and R-M refinish (BASF) · Sikkens refinish (AkzoNobel)
In plain English
Crash a car and the body shop has to make one new panel match the paint already on it — same colour, same sheen, first attempt. PPG sells that paint through distributors, along with the solvents, sundries and machines that dose it.
What wins the shop is the kit around the can: an automated mixer and PPG's LINQ software, sold on getting more cars through the bay in a day, and credited with taking share even while volumes fell. The size of the whole market comes down to how many cars are on the road and how often they are crashed — and claims actually fell in spring 2026, a first in five years.

Packaging Coatings
The lining inside food and drink cans, plus the coating on the outside. Small, and the clearest share-winner in the portfolio: volumes up over 20% on a two-year stack as customers adopt its BPA-free INNOVEL lining, now sold in 27 countries.
Competes with Valspar packaging coatings (Sherwin-Williams) · Packaging coatings (AkzoNobel) · Can coatings (Kansai)
In plain English
The inside of a drinks can is not bare metal. A very thin coating sits between the metal and what you swallow, and food-contact rules decide what that coating may be made of. PPG makes the lining, and the paint on the outside of the can too.
For decades those linings used a chemical called BPA, which European food-packaging rules are phasing out. PPG's INNOVEL was the first BPA-free lining for aluminium drink cans, and the switch is only part done — more than half of the U.S. and more than a fifth of Europe. Can makers change over line by line, and each line changed is share taken.
