Bryant Riley founded B. Riley & Co. in Los Angeles in 1997; it merged with Great American Group in 2014 to form B. Riley Financial. After acquiring FBR & Co. in June 2017, the firm combined the two broker-dealers as B. Riley FBR, renamed B. Riley Securities in 2020. The parent became BRC Group Holdings on January 1, 2026, and in April 2026 announced plans to buy out the roughly 8% minority stake and merge the firm with B. Riley Wealth.

Research philosophy
B. Riley's investment philosophy is founded on the idea that the securities of smaller companies that are off the radar screen of big Wall Street firms present the potential for outsized, risk-adjusted returns.
Founder Bryant Riley said in 2005 that small-cap stocks can offer value because many institutional investors cannot build large positions in them. The firm stayed out of investment banking until 2003, saying it prioritized client investment returns over banking fees. It began coverage only after due diligence that included meetings with management, competitors, channel partners and customers. As of 2026, it describes its research as combining fundamental and thematic analysis.
