Needham publishes equity research on more than 450 public companies in about 20 sectors as of 2025, with particular depth in semiconductors, software and life sciences. About 73% of covered companies carried Buy-equivalent ratings in May 2024. It pairs coverage with corporate access, from non-deal roadshows and field trips to the annual Needham Growth Conference, which drew more than 375 companies in 2026. Its sister asset manager describes a patient approach: buying what it calls "Hidden Compounders" and holding its largest positions for about ten years on average (as of 2022).
George A. Needham co-founded Needham & Company in New York in 1985 as an investment bank for small- and mid-cap growth companies. He founded Needham Asset Management in 1992, and Needham & Company, Inc. later became The Needham Group, Inc., the holding company for the broker-dealer, now Needham & Company, LLC, and the asset-management business. The group is independent and employee-owned, with offices in Boston, Minneapolis, San Francisco and Miami.
