David Coker founded Coker & Palmer, Inc. in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1991 as a securities brokerage and investment advisory firm. Coker Palmer Institutional was formed in June 2015 as a standalone institutional research, sales and trading division. In July 2026 the Coker & Palmer team, with about US$650 million in client assets, joined Boston-based Moors & Cabot, and the broker-dealer requested termination of its registration.

Coker Palmer Institutional positioned itself as an alternative to large investment banks and research boutiques with investment or commercial banking ties. It said the absence of a large investment banking business allowed its analysts to remain objective. Its research combined industry and company contacts, macroeconomic and company models, and proprietary industry sources. As of 2021, it described idea generation as a joint effort across research, sales and trading.
