Capitol Federal Financial, Inc.CFFNFinancials

A single-segment Kansas thrift operating 51 branches across Kansas and the Kansas City metro, with a loan book concentrated in long-duration one-to-four-family residential mortgages and a stated policy of paying out essentially all earnings as dividends each fiscal year.

Founded in Topeka in 1893, Capitol Federal Savings Bank is a federally chartered savings bank that funds itself from Kansas retail deposits and lends out almost entirely as long-duration one-to-four-family residential mortgages.

The 51-branch network spans nine Kansas counties and the Missouri side of the Kansas City metro — Topeka, Wichita, Lawrence, and greater Kansas City. There is no lending or deposit presence outside that region.

Management commits to paying out essentially all earnings each fiscal year through regular quarterly dividends and the branded True Blue Capitol capital-return dividends, funded by the Bank distributing capital to the holding company.

The business carries a duration mismatch — long-dated mortgage assets funded by shorter-duration deposits and Federal Home Loan Bank borrowings — which drove a large securities loss in fiscal 2023 when rates rose sharply.
