Profile

Richardson Electronics, Ltd.RELLInformation Technology

Makes power grid and microwave tubes, radio-frequency and power components, and custom displays for industrial, medical, and communications-equipment builders, while a growing green-energy line supplies ultracapacitor pitch modules that replace batteries in wind-turbine systems. Publicly listed since 1983 and still controlled by the founding family through a dual-class share structure.

Engineers power grid and microwave tubes, radio-frequency and power components, and custom displays for industrial, medical, and communications-equipment makers. A newer green-energy line supplies ultracapacitor pitch modules that replace lead-acid batteries in wind-turbine systems, plus shunt resistors and storage systems for renewable and industrial power markets.

Tube and RF components serve broadcast, radar, and semiconductor-equipment builders, while displays go to medical and industrial-equipment makers, built in Illinois, Massachusetts, and Germany. Most output is manufactured in-house, and sales offices span dozens of countries outside the United States.

Family-controlled since its 1947 founding as a war-surplus vacuum-tube distributor, the business is still run by the founder's son under a dual-class structure that keeps voting control with the family. It sold its original distribution arm to a larger distributor and later divested most of its diagnostic-imaging business, redirecting resources into the wind-energy line.
