Profile

Intrepid Potash, Inc.IPIMaterials

Mines muriate of potash and Trio, a chloride-free specialty fertilizer, at sites in Utah and New Mexico, while a third segment sells water and land easements to Permian Basin oil and gas operators. Potash and Trio account for most of the revenue, with sales concentrated almost entirely in the United States.

Mines muriate of potash, a crop-nutrient fertilizer, at three solar-evaporation sites in Utah and New Mexico, and produces Trio, a chloride-free langbeinite fertilizer, from a single underground mine near Carlsbad. A third segment sells water, brine, and land easements to Permian Basin oil and gas operators.

Potash and Trio provide most of the revenue, with the oilfield business a smaller complement; sales concentrate almost entirely within the United States. Potash prices are set globally by far larger producers in Canada, Belarus, and Russia, exposing margins to import competition.

Permian Basin drilling activity, including a multi-year payment arrangement with XTO Energy tied to development pace near Carlsbad, shapes cash flow in the oilfield segment. Solar-pond evaporation, not conventional underground mining, defines the potash operation's cost structure and keeps it the only muriate-of-potash producer operating at scale in the country.
