Research philosophy
Our independence allows us to make critical judgments about companies that we might not be so free to make were we competing for a firm’s underwriting business.
Argus evaluates six areas: industry, growth, financial strength, management, risk and valuation. It describes a top-down process that starts with forecasts for the economy and interest rates, identifies industries likely to perform well over one to two years, and then selects leading companies for coverage. Proposed rating changes are debated at weekly meetings of all analysts before a final decision is made with the director of research or a member of the Investment Policy Committee.
Rating methodology
Each covered stock carries a 12-month Buy, Hold or Sell rating relative to the S&P 500 on a risk-adjusted basis, plus a five-year rating.
